Episode 494 – Welcome 2021

We are back for 2021!
This week, we talk about Glynn’s mum, and surfing lessons.
Samsung’s Galaxy S21 has some pretty amazing AI-enabled trickery built in, like the ability to automagically remove background distractions from your photos.

The world’s largest photography trade show, Photokina, closes its doors after 70 years.

The financial strain on the manufacturer side of the industry continues to exert its pull. Nikon has gone from A$60M profit last year, to a A$720M deficit this year. As Glynn said last year, this was always likely, because last year, the reporting covered what happened in 2019.

Asus is one manufacturer that is still innovating, with their new dual-screen notebooks, the ZenBook Pro Duo 15 OLED (model number UX582) and the ZenBook Duo 14 (model number UX482).

After coming across some photography-related poetry online, Glynn decides to try his hand at some verbal gymnastics.

This guy does some absolutely stunning photos of individual snowflakes.

You would be forgiven for not expecting the world’s longest photographic exposure to have been accomplished with some photo paper inside a soft drink can, but there ya go!

In the last week, I received an e-mail blast from Serif/Affinity, regarding their re-introduced extended trial period (90 days) and 50% discount. At less than A$40 for Affinity Photo, you’d be crazy NOT to pick this up! No, I’m not being paid to promote it 🙂 But Serif has always done really competent software. I’ve bought it, and will run it on my windoze box, as well as seeing if I can get it running inside linux (through Wine).

I have been a professional audio engineer since the mid 80's and am happy to do for free in my spare time what I get paid to do during the week. I created Shutters Inc in May 2005, and it is today (as best as I can tell) THE longest-running photography podcast in the world.

    Hey Bruce and Glynn!
Bruce mentioned a guy who took pictures of individual snowflakes in this episode. I thought you might enjoy this link to the master of such things, Don Komarechka (fellow Canadian, based out of Barry, Ontario). I’m pretty sure he even details his process on the site. This guy is also a great future podcast guest. I’ve heard him many times—very passionate about his craft. Cheers!
