Episode 481 – The less we post, the better we look

This week, Sony says they’re struggling to ship enough units of the a7siii,
AI tech keeps getting better, with this project creating 3D renders from crowd-sourced 2D stills,
plus this post suggests 3 reasons why you should share your not-so-great photographs. Glynn does not agree.
We talked about the Bruce Springsteen version of Don’t Change, with its crowd-sourced footage.

Adam shared the story of Canon’s unfortunate loss of user images.
And the photographer using masks and toilet paper for mini-landscapes.

Kevin McKibben wrote to tell us about a new iOS app called Explorest, which hopes to help travelling photographers find photogenic locations.
Explorest on iTunes

Glynn’s been following an old story.
Remember the one about the photographer and model who shot some images with a Volvo car?
And then they posted the shots on Insta?
And Volvo took the images and posted them on their account?
And she was then found to be in breach of her contract to some other car company?
Well, Volvo’s argument is “if they’re public, they’re free”.
Ah… no. That’s not how it works.
It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Meike releases their cheap 85/1.8 lens for Nikon (I believe the Canon version has been available for a while already).

Fawkes is software designed to subtly alter images of your face so that you are not recognisable to facial recognition algorithms like Microsoft Azure Face API, Amazon Rekognition, and Face++, yet us flesh-and-blood humans cannot tell the difference.

Then, there’s unsplash (which I’m fairly sure we’ve mentioned before). They’ve now allegedly got over 1 BILLION images which anyone can use for free!

They’ve got gear suggestions, software suggestions, tutorials, and all sorts of good stuff!

Kodak was in the news 2 weeks ago because of their pivot to a pharmaceutical company. But now they’re in the news for all the wrong reasons.
Seems a fair bit of trading took place in the stock a mere 24 hours prior to the announcement, which means a lot of insider trading was taking place. Uh-oh.

I have been a professional audio engineer since the mid 80's and am happy to do for free in my spare time what I get paid to do during the week. I created Shutters Inc in May 2005, and it is today (as best as I can tell) THE longest-running photography podcast in the world.

Did you hear that Nikon is launching a new lens designed especially for abseilers?
    It’s called Why Dangle.
(Glynn, Feel free to use this if you’re desperate – it’s an original).
    Cheers Rob C
