Episode 379 – The ups and downs of travel insurance

This week, the travel insurance fallout. Some good, some not so good.

David Foggin is both a contributor to, and PR/marketing guru for, an exhibition called “The Collective”. The Facebook page is here. Check it out for more info.

Ian Collard most generously offered my his no-longer-used Minolta 75-300mm kit lens to replace my recently-stolen one. Plus another lens as well. Thanks Ian. I really do appreciate the offer! What a legend.

Adam has been filing stories on the FB wall for a few weeks now, and there’s a heap to cover:

Glynn is equally bamboozled by the judges awarding the top prize in a drawing competition to someone who hung carpet offcuts over some suspended string. Say wha?

America’s TSA now requires camera gear to be scanned separately. Oh joy.

Godox brings you off-camera flash for your smartphone. Glynn is positively frothing at the mouth!

Souvid Datta (who we spoke of in episode #374) is in hot water again (or is that “still”?). This time over doctored images.

The lighting company Bowens is switching off the lights and locking the doors. See what I did there? Sadly, the cheap knock-off brands and innovation coming out of China and other Asian markets has made the business unviable for the 94 year old company.

I’m on the lookout for a replacement for Triggertrap. Although the app is still availble, I can no longer buy the cable now that the company has closed down.
Glynn suggested Pluto trigger, which certainly looks like it does what Triggertrap does/did. But with Triggertrap, I only had to buy a $20 cable, and download a free app for my phone. With Pluto, I need to buy a cable AND spend $120 on a gadget as well. If anyone knows of a similar product to Triggertrap, please let me know!
I also mentioned Nero, which has now rebranded itseld as MIOPS (Yuck. Nero sounded much better! Must have been a naming rights infringement, I’m guessing)
But, this is a $20 cable and a $200+ gadget.
Maybe I just need to keep an eye on Ebay for a Triggertrap cable for my Sony a850.

Addendum : I was just looking at both the Pluto and MIOPS sites, and it occurred to me that they both sell a cable which is compatible with my camera. And given that the cable doesn’t DO anything other than connect a signal between two plugs, they SHOULD be ok to use with the Triggertrap app. So, I’ve just lashed out the $11 for a Pluto cable. Fingers crossed!

I mentioned, at the end of the ep, the light in a painting of some cows at the Musee D’Orsay. Here’s the image, although it doesn’t do the painting justice.

Mooooo!
The painting looked much more interesting in real life.

And while we’re posting images, here’s a couple of what the pink lake near Quairading normally looks like. These were taken in January 2016.

Also, a couple of people have mentioned that old episodes of the podcast can’t be downloaded. I’ve adjusted the folder locations for the mp3 files at shuttersincpodcast. Hopefully, they will now all be able to be downloaded, if only manually. A bigger “hopefully” is that I haven’t broken anything in the process!
